I’m Back, Hopefully

I’m Back, Hopefully

Kelly Kang

He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the LORD. – Proverbs 18:22

I am so blessed to have my wife, Hyeyoung (Kelly) Kang.

We got in a huge fight Sunday morning about something very silly – I slept in and didn’t help her with getting the babies ready for church.

Not one of my best moments.

This is proof that satan or my sinful nature wants me to go to hell.

21 “You have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘You shall not murder, and anyone who murders will be subject to judgment.’ 22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with a brother or sister will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to a brother or sister, ‘Raca,’ is answerable to the court. And anyone who says, ‘You fool!’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.

23 “Therefore, if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother or sister has something against you, 24 leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to them; then come and offer your gift. – Matthew 5:21-24

We were already 20 minutes late for our outdoor service at the Bundang Church of Christ.

I asked my wife what was wrong in the car. I got defensive and angry. I scared the babies. It was just not a good time.

Honestly, I didn’t want to go to church after having this argument. I was planning on dropping my family off and go off somewhere to cool down.

Luckily, Kelly came up with a great idea of dropping off the kids with the brothers and sisters, so we can get the two of us sorted out.

Church was over and everyone was playing games and enjoying the weather by the time we arrived.

My wife and I returned to the car and finished out discussion.

There was a lot of things that both us had not dealt with and the annoyances just piled up.

The conclusion we came to was that we need to have nightly discussions. John Louis from the Singapore Church recommends that married couples spend one hour a night and four hours (date night) one day during the weekend for relational growth and maturity. For a total of eleven hours total per week.

Naturally, we were both failing that and blaming life’s circumstances. I don’t want to blame my babies for the deterioration of our marriage.

My wife graciously offered that I go to a local cafe and spend my time with God daily. I didn’t do this because I wanted to be there for my wife and support the kids. However, that resulted in a lack of time building a relationship with God. Ultimately, putting us in the situation where we were yesterday – bitter, angry, and prideful.

My wife and I want to have a marriage filled with love, grace, and peace.

43 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. 44 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ When it arrives, it finds the house unoccupied, swept clean and put in order. 45 Then it goes and takes with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first. That is how it will be with this wicked generation.” -Matthew 12:43-45

What I was doing did not work.

I want to clean my brain (house) and replace my demons (bad habits) to good habits (good occupants).

My wife and I made a decision to have nightly walks with the children after dinner. During this walk talk, pray, and teach our kids the habits of praying and exercise.

Thank you for reading. God bless you.

Ultimately,  I hope this means more consistent time to reflect, share, and build a relationship with God.

What are some habits that help your marriage/relationship grow?

How to be a Good Steward of God’s Money

How to be a Good Steward of God’s Money

Money Grow

This is a guest post from a friend of mine named Aaron Tomkins. He sent me an article called “15 Biases That Make You Do Dumb Things With Your Money“. Which essentially says that you should be humble when you are investing and never be over confident, because we are all biased in some form or another.

I asked him to provide his insights on How to be a Good Steward of God’s Money. Here’s what he shares:

Since God doesn’t expect us to be able to predict where interests rates are going, what inflation is going to look like next year, or whether Apple’s next five years are going to be as profitable as their past five years, I think everyone was already born with the tools needed to be a good steward of God’s money. Here are some examples of practicals though:

1. Don’t buy a $40,000 car if you’re making $50,000 a year. Buy a car you can afford, preferably with cash. If you have a car that you can’t afford, sell it, even if it means you’d be taking a loss.

2. Don’t buy a home you can’t afford; the general consensus is that 25-33% of your take-home pay a month should go toward housing. If your mortgage payment is 50% of your take-home pay, you probably bought a home you can’t afford.

3. If you do invest in the stock market, have reasonable expectations and goals. If you don’t know what you’re doing, stay conservative and buy things like index funds. The stock market will return an average of 5% a year, if you stay in your investments and don’t trade all the time, you’ll accumulate a lot of wealth from those returns. If you’re constantly moving in and out of investments, then transaction costs will severely eat away at your returns. And if your stock broker or financial adviser promises you returns of 10-15% a year in the market, run away.

4. Don’t make emotional purchases. Obviously you can buy nice things (big TV, nice computer, etc.), go out to eat and enjoy life with your money. But don’t buy things that you can’t afford – i.e. that are going on a credit card and you won’t be able to pay off for a long time.

5. Give money to God and be generous with your money. The motivation for accumulating wealth should ultimately be that you can give more away. If you’re responsible with what money you have, God will probably give you more in time. If you’ve been proven as being irresponsible with a little though, then he probably won’t give you much more.

6. If you do have an interest in finance, there are a bunch of ways to educate yourself for free. If you have an ipod, download some good podcasts, like the Dave Ramsey Show. Motley Fool also has some good free podcasts if you’re educated in the stock market. Just be aware that even the professionals don’t know everything, so it’s good to expose yourself to differing opinions and then develop a perspective that makes the most sense to you.

7. Finally, the funny thing about opportunity is that it tends to appear (or maybe you only recognize it) after you’ve taken care of the basics. If you’re wrestling with staying above water and living from paycheck to paycheck, do you really think you can do anything with a golden investment opportunity when it comes? You’ll be too pre-occupied with the stresses of your life to even begin worrying about the longer-term. An interesting thing about Apple is that when Steve Jobs returned as CEO, he didn’t start by innovating and producing pioneering products. He started with the basics: getting Apple’s balance sheet fixed, getting their supply chain in order, making the Macintosh work, etc. Even when they finally released the iPod, they weren’t the first ones in the mp3 market by far. But if you have a strong financial foundation backing you, then more options, opportunity, and flexibility will appear.

Anyway, hope that helps!

I’ve been burned several times because I was being greedy also known as “trying to get rich fast.”

A couple of years ago in the Orange County Church I attended a http://www.crown.org/ class.
This year I plan on taking Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University.
At the end of the day, I want to be the type of servant that at least double’s my masters’ money/value.
Let me know what you think about money and God.

I am an Expert Quitter. What about you?

by Hoo · Aug 19, 2013

Just Quit (OvO) via Compfight

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full. (John 10:10)

If I could consider myself an expert in anything the first thing that comes to mind is quitting.

I’ve quit taekwondo, the trombone, the drums, piano, exercise, dieting, and tons more.
I justified it by saying that I was “testing” it.

Frankly, I am sick with the current state of my life. I am no where near where I want to be.

I am extremely disappointed in myself in the areas of spirituality, emotional maturity, and personal development.

However, I hit a turning point today.

It begins with an innocent excuse. Work was overwhelming so I’ll work out tomorrow. Tomorrow goes by and I’m “too tired.”

Naturally I didn’t have the grit to fight through the simple challenge.

My brother Rex Kang invested a month in helping me get healthier with his Become Saiyan program. Last Friday was orientation day for the new students at Seoul International School.

It was hectic and I got out of work late. I didn’t work out and I said I would do it Saturday. On Saturday my wife and I got in a small argument and I said I would work out Sunday.

Sunday came around. I fumbled around and did nothing productive. I am sick of getting to that state. Yet that is where I seem to get myself consistently whenever I burn out or whatever other cheap excuse I can come up with.

Its going to stop today. I want to become the man I set out to be – the one that my family, friends, community, and the world deserve.

I don’t want my life to be a small blip on the radar. A life lived in selfishness. A waste.

I want to live a life that influences others to become the best they can. As Jesus Christ said to live life to the full. (John 10:10).

After getting off of work late… again. I went to push and challenge my body in the weight room.

Honestly, I hate exercise. I hate sweating and getting dirty.

My brother, Rex, believed and pushed me. I’ve never done a chin up or pull up in my life. I’ve always been a heavy boy.

I was actually able to bring myself half way up. To me that is progress. If I was in an action sequence with my life on the line. I wouldn’t be able to save myself let alone anyone else.

After some reflection here are the steps I think will help you transform into someone you want to be.

1) Define what you want – I want to have a six pack for once in my life and keep it as long as I can. Rex says with 6 months of following program I will be able to reverse 30 years of poor eating and laziness.

2) Get support – My brother Rex was there to help me for the first month. I typically give up after a week or two. Find a champion who will support you and push you.

3) Make the decision – Do you have the grit? Even when it is something stupid. Are willing to decide. The decision to change your life. The decision to make a difference. The courage to defeat your inner demon.

4) Set yourself up for success – Create an environment that will support you in your goal. I have to pack all of my workout clothes, supplements, water, and music the night before. Put all that stuff right next to the door- so when I leave I just know to take it with me.

I was able to exercise today.

I also want to become a better writer. Write 500 words a day. I’m doing that right now. Hard to do consistently, but I want to. It helps be reflect and analyze. It may help someone too.

I will become an expert at grit, perseverance, and passion. Those are qualities I admire and I want to have.

Thanks for reading.

Voyeurism is fun, but interacting is even better. Comment and share your thoughts.

God bless you.

How to Seek First His Kingdom

How to Seek First His Kingdom

by Hoo · Jun 7, 2013

Framing The Field

One of my goals in life is to get into heaven.

The Bible clearly lays out how to get into heaven.
The foundation is having a close relationship with God.

Before, I get ahead of myself.

What does the Bible say?

25 Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

– Matthew 6: 25-34 (Emphasis mine)

I can go off many tangents here.

I want to answer the question is “How do you know when you are seeking first his kingdom and his righteousness?”

What does it mean to seek first?

Seeking is an attempt to find something, a desire to obtain or achieve something.

First meaning it should be your highest priority.

What is his kingdom?

Everything dealing with God. The church, Jesus, God’s will, the Holy Spirit, and the Word.

What is his righteousness?

Godly conduct. Is your actions in line with God’s will?

How do I apply this practically?

  • Pray consistently/daily
  • Read your Bible consistently/daily
  • Fellowship with christians consistently/weekly if not more
  • Be mindful about God throughout the day
  • Share the good news with those who don’t know yet or are misinformed

Honestly, I need to work on all of these areas. I want to be better. I want a closer relationship with God.
I would like to say at one point in my life that I have never missed a quiet time in a year.

It’s overwhelming so I’m going to have to do another simple promise to myself and keep myself accountable for another 30 days of quiet time sharing through my blog. Please follow along and provide insight, comments, and encouragement.

I’m too fragile right now to take any criticism so if you can make it a constructive one – filled with love go for it.

Ideally, I would love to do it in the mornings and I can on weekends, but I have a challenging time on the week days.

It’s recommended to have you quiet times in the morning “being first”, perhaps one day.

Please correct me if I’m wrong and please share on how you seek first his kingdom.

Thank you for reading and God bless.

Love and peace,

Hoo Kang
